A safe shelter for refugees in Amsterdam

Vulnerable categories of refugees — such as women travelling alone or with young children, and LGBTI people — are often facing difficult living conditions in Dutch reception centres.

Having fled threats and violence at home, many find themselves in living arrangements that remain unsafe. Some feel compelled to hide their true selves, while others face discrimination, intimidation or even violence. Children, meanwhile, lack the healthy environments they need to grow and develop.

The Committee for Safe Shelters in Amsterdam (CVOA) is working to establish one or more reception centres in the capital where vulnerable refugees can finally feel safe. The committee draws inspiration from successful models in other European countries.

The problem has been recognised for many years. It is long overdue to implement a proven solution.
