The Committee for Safe Shelters in Amsterdam (CVOA) initiates and engages in conversations with many people and organisations relevant to the protection of vulnerable refugee groups. It aims to forge a breakthrough in the creation of one or more safe centres for such groups in Amsterdam.

The Committee first stepped into the foreground in early 2025 during a meeting of the City Council of Amsterdam. There it called attention to both the problem and examples of the solution (see videos of the contributions of Omari, CVOA, and COC Amsterdam).

Media attention was triggered when four political groups — D66, Groenlinks (now PRO), Volt and the Party for the Animals — submitted a formal proposal, inspired by the work of the committee, to the city government of Amsterdam.

Among others, daily newspaper Trouw, Amsterdam broadcaster AT5, NH Nieuws, Gaykrant, Noordhollands Dagblad, Hart van Nederland, Cocktail Online, Vandaag Inside en NL Times reported on Omari’s story and the proposal.
